OELWEIN - Funeral services for Charles A. Fereday were 11 a.m. Saturday, June 28, at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, with the Rev. Robert Dagit officiating. Burial was in Hazleton Cemetery, with military graveside rites performed by Ross Reid American Legion Post 9 ofOelwein.
Mr. Fereday, 73, died Wednesday evening, June 25, 1997, at Mercy Hospital of Franciscan Sisters, Oelwein, after a lengthy illness.
He was born Sept 19, 1923, in Oelwein, the son of Allen and Irma (Putman) Fereday. He served as a Darby Ranger in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded two Purple Hearts and three Bronze Stars for his service in Rhineland and Normandy in northern France. He married Helen Paine on Oct. 10, 1942 in Kahoka, Mo. Mr. Fereday was a lifelong Oelwein resident. He owned and operated Home Furnishings Company in Oelwein and was a salesman. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and the Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; one daughter, Karen (Darnell) Huinker of Cabot, Ark; two sons, John (Christine) of Oelwein and Michael (Marnie) of Dalton, Ga., five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and one sister, Lucille Hare of Independence.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
