Magdalena Weller Shomer (1800-1887)

Magdalena Weller was born at Schlott, in Prusia, January 1, 1880 (1800?), the first day of the present century. At the age of 25 she married John Shomer and removed to Biensfelt. In the fall of 1856 Mr. and Mrs. Shomer came to this country and located first at Brandt, Ohio, where they resided until May, 1862 when they removed to Winona, Illinois. Mr. Shomer died at Winona, September 14, 1872. In 1882 Mrs. Shomer came to Oran township to spend a season with her son, Matthias; and soon after was followed by her son, Michael, who bought in the vicinity and with whom she subsequently lived until her death. John and Magdalena Shomer had seven children, five boys and two girls. John died at 25 and Frank at the age of 11, both in Germany; Jacob died at the age of 31, at Brandt, Ohio; Michael and Matthias are now residents of Oran township; Margaret, wife of John Kroeschel lives in Winona, Illinois, and Katherine, wife of Christian Taberg, lives in Shenoh, Illinois. Mrs. Shomer departed this life at the residence of her son Michael, in Oran township, at one o'clock in the morning. She was a devoted Catholic and was buried in the Catholic cemetery at Oelwein, funeral taking place at the Catholic church in that place. Her age was 87 years, 3 months, and 28 days. John Shomer servied 8 years under Napoleon Bonaparte and was for the four years preceding Bonaparte's firs capture, a member of his famous body guard.

Note - no record of above burial in Old Catholic cemetery records but while checking Woodlawn records, found that the above burial was moved from Old Catholic to Woodlawn about 27 October 1920 (the permit date).
