Winslow Stearns was one of the first settlers at Westfield Township. He was the son of Hamilton Joseph Stearns and Sophronia Wheeler born 6 Dec 1825 in Vermont and moved to Clinton Co. NY before 1850 where he was a teacher. Winslow Stearns came to Iowa about 1851 and had 202 acres of land in Westfield Township. He married Phebe Kent in 1852. He was elected County Surveyor in October 1861 and served three terms, assessor one term and was town clerk for several years. A Congregational Church was organized at Lima by Rev. S.D. Helms in 1857 and Winslow Stearns and his wife were members. Winslow was deacon there and he later donated the land where the LIma Congregational Church was built. Winslow died 1889. Children were: (1) Orville b. 3 Oct. 1854 (2) Aurelia b. 30 May 1859 (3) Eugenia b. 1870
