STEARNS, Hamilton Joseph brought his family to Fayette County Iowa about 1861. His son Winslow had settled there ten years earlier and was farming in Westfield Township. H. J. Stearns was born 1 Jan. 1799 in Monkton, Addison Co. VT and was married there to Sophronia Wheeler in 1824. About 1840 they moved to Clinton Co. NY and were living in Beekmantown where he was a tailor and a farmer. His wife died there 19 Oct. 1843 and he married Rebecca Mix 31 Jan. 1844. Children: Winslow (b 6 Dec 1825) Sheldon Wheeler (b 3 Jan 1827) Charles (b 9 Dec 1831) Mary Emeline (b 9 Feb 1845) and Jay H.(b 12 Jan 1853) H. J. Stearns died in 1879.
