Childbirth is Fatal to Young Mother Here
Mrs. Ansel Elwell, 26, died at one o’clock this morning at her home in Estherville. Mrs. Elwell had given birth to a son Saturday [July 9, 1932] night who lived only until Sunday [July 10 1932]. Her condition had been serious for the three days previous to the child’s birth because of organic complications and the delivery was made by the feeble rays of an oil lamp, the electric service having broken off during the storm.

Vera Fisher was born October 29, 1906 in Hamilton county. She has lived in Estherville for 11 years and was an employee of the Estherville Laundry during this time. She is survived by her husband and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Fisher, and by several brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held on Friday afternoon at two-thirty at the Baptist church in charge of Rev. Frank Yearnd. Interment will be made in Oak Hill cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, July 13, 1932)

Two Deaths Are Attributed to the Furies of Sat. Storm

The death last night of Mrs. Ansel Elwell seems doubly sad on account of the conditions previously surrounding the death.

Mrs. Elwell was ill during the terrible storm of last Saturday evening. During the storm she gave birth to a baby. But just before the arrival of the baby the storm struck with all its fury. The city lights went out and there was no light in the home. Dr. Morton was compelled to get a flash light from town and during the time Mrs. Elwell became very ill. In the loss of the baby and then the mother it makes the death seem the more sad.

Mrs. Elwell’s condition has been known to be very serious and it seemed only a question of time for the last two days.

Mrs. Elwell was born in Webster City on October 3, 1905. She has been in the employ of the laundry since she came to Estherville eleven years ago. Five years ago she was married to Mr. Elwell who is in the employ of the Estherville Steam Bakery.

She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Fisher and has five sisters and four brothers living. They were all at her bedside at the time of her death.

The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the Baptist Church at two thirty with Rev. Yearnd officiating. Interment will be made in Oak Hill Cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, July 13, 1932)
