Obituary – Ellis
Clarence Emil Ellis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Ellis, was born October 4th, 1887, in Estherville, Iowa. He passed away at the home of his parents in this city Thursday evening, January 13, 1916, at the age of 28 years, 3 months and 8 days. He attended the public schools of Estherville in early life, and when he arrived a manhood he was employed by the Rock Island Railroad Company for a number of years. Owing to failing health he severed his connection with this company about two years ago. About ten days ago he took sick, but it was not thought at first his sickness was serious. On Tuesday, however, he grew worse, developing a high fever. The end came on Thursday night, from what the doctors pronounced apoplexy. He leaves a father and mother, two brothers, Robert and Raymond, and five sisters, Mrs. Nora Shaffer, Ethel, Grace, Winnie and Edith to mourn his departure. Clarence was a good boy in the home and showed a special consideration and tenderness to his mother, often relieving her of household duties, that he might lighten her work and add to her comfort. Thus the burden will fall doubly heavy on her. The family have the sympathies of the entire community in this bereavement.

Funeral services were conducted at the Christian church by the minister, Rev. J. S. Coffin, Sunday morning at 11 o’clock, after which the remains were laid to rest in Oak Hill cemetery.

“Joy for thee, happy friend! Thy bark is past
The dangerous sea, and safely moored at last.
Beyond rough foam
Soft gales celestial in sweet music bore
Spirit emancipate for this far shore
Thee to thy House.

(Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, January 19, 1916)
