Taps Sounded For Another War Veteran
S. B. Embury Died Friday Morning After Short Illness
Funeral Held on Monday
Well Known Resident of Emmet County – Member of Local G.A.R. Here

Taps were sounded for another old soldier last Friday [November 29, 1918] morning, when S. B. Embury passed away at his home on 320 South Third street, from a complication of troubles which he suffered from for the past few weeks. The funeral was held from the Methodist Episcopal church Monday afternoon at 2:30, Rev. Walter Torbet conducting the services, and it was attended by a numerous lot of sympathizing friends and relatives.

Samuel Benjamin Embury was born in St. Armand, Quebec, Canada, on May 20, 1844, thus being aged 74 years and some months. He moved to Medford, Minnesota, with his parents at a very early age, and they shared the hardships of the western pioneer and successfully evaded the Indian massacre, and his father persisted in carving out a fine farm home at the edge of the pretty village near Faribault. The Embury family are direct lineal descendents of Phillip Embury, known in history as the founder of the first M.E. church in America. His mother was Hannah H. Brill, closely related to Judge Brill, of St. Paul. When the Civil War broke out young Mr. Embury stretched his imagination regarding his age to such a point as would make it look good to the recruiting officer, and hence was enrolled as a soldier in Company D, Eleventh Minnesota Inf., and he served from that time until the close of the war, down in Tennessee and Georgia, and was a member of the Estherville Camp of G.A.R. at the time of his death and was a very enthusiastic member.

He was married about forty years ago to Mrs. Hannah Hassing, formerly Miss Hannah Goodge. One daughter was born to them, now Mrs. John Hughes, of Toronto, Canada. Besides the daughter he was the stepfather of W. H. Hassing, now editor of the Carlton, Minnesota Vidette. Both of the children came to attend the funeral. He is also survived by four brothers, Russell and Robert, of Faribault, Minn., Carmi H., of Bellingham, Wash., and William L., of Oakland, Cal., besides numerous nephews and nieces, besides the stricken widow.

Mr. Embury was known to his friends in Estherville as a genial, kindly old man, scrupulously honest, willing to help a friend in need or do a good turn to a neighbor at any and all times. A rather retiring disposition, but well learned as a conversationalist when visiting his acquaintances. His last years being not overly well ones, he was unable to conduct an aggressive business or work, but held jobs as janitor to public buildings and private places and was always faithful to his trust and active nearly till the last, and many sincere expressions of regret are heard at his departure from earthly activities. He has been a firm believer in a life to come and has lived his best to merit a happy future. He had been a resident of Estherville for the past twenty years. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, December 4, 1918)
