Mrs. George Amdahl Passed Away Friday
Mother of J. G. Amdahl passed away last week; Funeral Was Held Monday; The Deceased Was 66 Years of Age

Mrs. Anna Amdahl, 66, of Estherville, mother of J. G. Amdahl, of Graettinger, passed away in the Deaconess hospital at Marshalltown Friday, July 17, at 5 p.m. following a surgical operation which she underwent the previous Wednesday. Mr and Mrs. Joe Amdahl, of Graettinger, Mrs. Charley Jackson, of Wallingford, and Mrs. Art Amdahl, of Estherville, were at her bedside when she passed away.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Amdahl at the chapel in the Marshalltown funeral home at 4 p.m. Saturday and the remains were then brought to her home in Estherville. Funeral services were held at Estherville Monday afternoon in the Lutheran church, the Rev. L. A. Mathre officiating. Interment was in Oak Hill cemetery by the side of her husband who passed away last December.

Anna Sandvig was born in Norway November 25, 1869. When she was a small child her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jens Sandvig, came to America. They first located at Seneca, Illinois, and later came to the Graettinger locality. On August 13, 1886, she was united in marriage to Mr. George Amdahl. Following their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Amdahl were employed in this vicinity and at the Okoboji’s. Later they moved to Marshalltown where they resided fourteen years. They then returned to this locality and purchased a farm three and one-half miles southwest of Wallingford. They remained on the farm for five years. Fourteen years ago they moved to Estherville where they subsequently made their home. Mr. Amdahl passed away last December.

Mr. and Mrs. Amdahl were the parents of four children. They are J. G. Amdahl of Graettinger; Arthur, of Estherville; Mrs. C. P. Jackson of Wallingford; and Emmett Amdahl of Jackson, Minnesota. (The Terril Record, Terril, IA, July 23, 1936)

Anna Serena Sandvig was born in Norway, November 25, 1869. Less than a year old she came with her parents to America. They settled first in Illinois. Here she was confirmed after instruction in the Lutheran faith by Pastor N. G. Nilsen, Oct. 12, 1884. Together with her family she moved to Palo Alto County, Iowa.

Here she was united in marriage to George Amdahl, the ceremony being the first performed by the pioneer pastor in Palo Alto County, Rev. L. C. Wigdahl. For about fourteen years they made their home in Marshalltown, Iowa, whereupon they settled in Palo Alto county, Iowa.

After renting a farm for five years, they purchased a farm three and one half miles southwest of Wallingford, where they continued to life until in 1920 when they moved into the fine home they had built on 3rd Avenue in Estherville, Mr. Amdahl passed away the 23rd of December last.

For some months Mrs. Amdahl made her home with her son, Arthur, and family in Estherville. Since April she has been on the farm with her daughter, Mrs. Charles Jackson and family.

Mrs. Amdahl has not been well for the last three or four years. Lately she had suffered very much and relief was sought in an operation at the Deaconess hospital at Marshalltown, Wednesday, July 15th. She never fully regained consciousness from the operation and death came Friday, July 187th, at 5 o’clock in the afternoon.

She leaves the four children, Joseph G. Amdahl of Graettinger, Arthur Amdahl of Estherville, Mabel, wife of Charles Jackson of Estherville and Emmet Amdahl of Jackson, Minn. There are 12 grandchildren, and the following brothers: Sam E. Sandvig of Graettinger, James Sandvig of Graettinger, Lewis Sandvig of Emmetsburg, J. Sandvig of Roland, Charles Sandvig of Marshalltown and one sister, Mrs. Lars Bakka of Roland, Iowa.

The funeral was held Monday from the Mahlum and Anderson chapel, where Rev. A. G. Bailey spoke briefly to the family and at the Estherville Lutheran Church at 2:30 o’clock, where Rev. L. A. Mathre officiated. Interment was made in the family plot at Oak Hill cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, July 22, 1936)
