GEORGE PULLEN DROPPED DEAD LAST MONDAY

Pioneer Resident of Estherville and Emmet County

HIGHLY RESPECTED CITIZEN

The community was extremely saddened Tuesday when it was learned that Geo. E. Pullen, a long time resident of this county, had passed away suddenly Monday evening [8 Dec 1924]. About a week ago he was taken ill and was in bed for a few days but had recovered enough to be able to be up and around again. Monday evening he went outside to assist his sons with the chores. While working around he called to one of his sons asking him to come to him but by the time he reached there Mr. Pullen was dead as a result of heart failure. He had been subject to these attacks for the past eighteen months but was never willing to submit to them.

Mr. Pullen was born in Redding, England, on December 8, 1851. At the time of his death he was exactly seventy-three years of age. When he was four years old he came to this country and settled at Rome, New York. He remained there for a few years and then went to Hartford, Wis., where he settled on a farm. On June 18, 1872, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Rowan and together they came to this county in 1878 and settled on a farm. They have made their home in or near Estherville ever since. In 1895 they moved to town and Mr. Pullen secured employment in the Rock Island roundhouse shops and worked there for several years. He was a steady, reliable workman and always won the confidence and respect of his fellow workmen as well as his employers.

Five children were born to this happy union all of whom are living. They are Charles, Frank, Thomas, Glenn and Miss Roseltha Pullen, all of this county.

Mr. Pullen's death marks the passing away of another of Emmet county's pioneers. Coming here when the county was in the process of being made he worked long and tirelessly to help build up this community. His success in this life stands as a memory to his unceasing efforts.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the house with the Rev. W. F. Huxford of the Baptist church officiating. Interment will be made at East Side Cemetery. Besides his devoted wife and children Mr. Pullen is survived by two sisters, Mrs. H. E. McCoy of Chicago and Mrs. Geo. Heathman of Plover, and one brother, Tom Pullen of this city. Two sisters-in-law, Mrs. W. J. Pullen and Mrs. Henry Pullen, both of this city, also survive him. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved family in their hours of sorrow.
