Former Globe-Gazette Telegraph Editor Dies at Estherville Home
Al M. Smillie, 40, reporter on the Estherville Daily News for the past five years and former telegraph editor on the Mason City Globe-Gazette, died Sunday [March 10, 1940] at his home in Estherville.

Mr. Smillie had suffered a liver ailment for several years. His wife survives.

Smillie was a son of Dr. and Mrs. B.A. Smillie of Gilmore City and was a graduate of the University of Missouri school of journalism. (Mason City Globe Gazette, Mason City, IA, March 11, 1940)

A.[Alexander] M. Smillie, the genial reporter for the Daily News passed away at the Smillie apartments on Sunday of a liver ailment. Mr. Smillie had been in poor health for sometime past. Death was unexpected at this time, however.

Mr. Smillie had been with the News for several years and was a good reporter and a fine fellow to meet as a competitor, always pleasant and accommodating. Mrs. Smillie is a professional nurse and has been connected with the Drs. Clark and Johnston offices in this city. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, March 14, 1940)

A.M. Smillie Dies at Estherville
Al Smillie, 40, of Estherville, died Sunday at the hospital there, following a liver ailment, which he had been afflicted with for several years.

He was born March 9, 1900 at Ann Arbor, Mich., and came to the state of Iowa with his parents when four years of age. He attended the public schools at Gilmore City and was later graduated from the University of Missouri. “Al” was employed as a reporter on the Record-Democrat for several months during 1932 and for the past five years on the Estherville Daily News.

He is survived by his wife, Josephine (Biederman) formerly of Rolfe. His parents, Dr. and Mrs. B.A. Smillie preceded him in death. (Pocahontas Record Democrat, Pocahontas, IA, March 14, 1940)

Note: per South Dakota Marriages, Al. M. Smillie of Spencer, Iowa, married Jose F. Biedermann of Rolfe, Iowa, on March 16, 1935 at Canton, Lincoln County, SD.
