Danial Lester Handeland the son of Lester C. and Lois (Williams) Handeland was born October 17, 1950, in Estherville, Iowa and departed this life on Sunday, October 10, 1999, at the Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa, at the age of 48 years 11 months and 13 days.

He attended elementary school in Gruver, Iowa and graduated from Lincoln Central High School in 1968. Dan then attended Jackson Vocational Technical College in Jackson, Minnesota and completed a course in refrigeration and appliance repair.

Dan worked with his father as a carpenter from 1968 until 1970. He then worked for John Morrell’s Meat Packing Plant for two years. On June 10, 1972, he was united in marriage to Jeanne Skattebo at the Wallingford Lutheran Church. The couple moved to Durango, Colorado, where Dan was employed at Quality Appliance and Repair. In 1974, they moved to Miles City, Montana, where he worked at the Farm and Home Store for a year before moving back to Durango in 1975. The family moved back to Wallingford in 1976 and Dan farmed with his father-in-law.

He was a member of the Wallingford Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council; Emmet County Pheasants Forever; Emmet County Farm Bureau; and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and the Izaac Walton League. Dan enjoyed hunting and tinkering.

Dan is survived by his wife, Jeanne of Wallingford; three children, Matthew Handeland of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Mark Handeland of Wallingford; Jennifer Handeland of Forest City, Iowa; his parents, Lester and Lois Handeland of Estherville; brother, Tim Handeland and his wife, Donna of Estherville; father-in-law, Ernest Skattebo; sister-in-law, Peggy Skattebo; nieces, Amy Wilcox, Anna Skattebo; Katie Skattebo; Claire Skattebo; nephews, Jason Handeland; Michael Skattebo; and Nathan Skattebo; aunts and uncles, Lloyd and Helen Birkland; Donald and Virginia Williams; Alice Olson; Edna Emerson; Ferne Handeland and also by numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents; mother-in-law, Mary Margaret Skattebo; brother-in-law, Jim Skattebo and aunts and uncles.
