Edward Phillip Meyer
Edward Phillip Meyer was born Nov. 21, 1862 in Yorktown township, Henry County, Illinois. He passed away about 3:30 a.m. on Nov. 19, 1935 at his home in Armstrong, Iowa, within two days of his 73rd birthday. He had been ill with heart trouble since last June.

He moved with his parents to Iowa at the age of 13 years and lived in or near Grand Junction, Iowa, until 1900. His boyhood days were spent mostly on the farm.

He attended grammar and high school at Grand Junction and also studied vocal and instrumental music. Mr. Meyer became a Christian in early manhood and was a member of the Methodist Church.

He was united in marriage to Miss Anne S. Herrick of Dana, Iowa, at Grand Junction on Feb. 1, 1893. To this union were born three children, Bethel M., Mildred Elizabeth and Donald Edward. Those surviving include the wife and one daughter, Mrs. Max Scheil of Sioux City, Iowa, two grandchildren, Betty and Charles Scheil, and one brother of California.

Mr. Meyer was manager of grain elevators for 24 years and so his home has been in different places during that time. He retired eight years ago and has resided in Armstrong. He was honest, kind, patient and industrious, working far too hard for his strength; willing and glad to sacrifice his comfort to do for himself and others, toiling as long as he could. He suffered in silence and though he found it hard to understand why he couldn’t travel Home by a shorter route, remained steadfast to his faith. He said once to his pastor, I’m just the way the Lord wants me to be.”

Funeral services were held in the Methodist Episcopal Church on Nov. 21, with the Rev. D.W. Thompson of Marshalltown, Ia., in charge, attended by the local pastor, Rev. J.D. Wolcott.

Out-of-town relatives attending the funeral were George Herrick, Mrs. John Cody, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Luther, Mr. Elmer Cartwright and a friend, Mr. Henry Frantz, all of Grand Junction, Iowa. Interment was made in Armstrong Grove Cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, November 27, 1935)
