C.A. McKean Dies at 73 After Stroke
Charles A. [Arthur] McKean, 73, retired Armstrong farmer, died late yesterday afternoon at the Fairmont Community Hospital. Death was attributed to a stroke.

Mr. McKean was driving alone from Armstrong to Fairmont, when he became ill at Ceylon and was taken to the hospital, where he died a short time later.

He was born Sept. 5, 1893, at Maple Hill, the son of Mr. and Mrs. James McKean. He received his education in Maple Hill area schools, graduated from the Armstrong High School, and attended Highland Park College at Des Moines.

Feb. 26, 1919, he was married to Emma Steele at Edgewood. The couple farmed in the Armstrong area from 1936 to 1962, when Mr. McKean retired and moved to the town of Armstrong.

Mrs. McKean died in 1955.

Mr. McKean was a past elder, trustee, and Sunday School superintendent of the Armstrong Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by three son, Merton of Goldfield, Keith of Armstrong, and Russell of Fairmont, five daughters, Mrs. Calvin (Gertrude) Jensen of Armstrong, Mrs. Oliver (Dorothy) Helgason of Armstrong, Mrs. Richard (Joyce) Peton of Estherville, Mrs. Harry (Mary Jane) Helgason of Estherville, and Margola McKean of Kent, Wash.; 19 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Also surviving are three brothers, Edwin of Estherville, Raymond of Maple Hill, and Mac of Armstrong, and two sisters, Mrs. Chris Jespersen of Estherville and Mrs. Kenneth Ayers of Bradentown, Fla.

Mr. McKean was preceded in death by his wife, parents, and two brothers.

Family services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Armstrong Presbyterian Church, followed by public services at 2 p.m., Rev. Ellis K. Gasser officiating. Burial will be in Armstrong Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Slaba-Reese Funeral Home in Armstrong after 6 p.m. Friday, until 10:30 a.m. Saturday, when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of services. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 15, 1966)
