Last Rites for George McKean Held June 25
Last rites for George Joel McKean, 64, longtime resident of the Maple Hill area, were held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, June 25 at the First Presbyterian Church in Estherville. The Rev. James K. Lyon officiated with burial at Armstrong Grove Cemetery.

Mr. McKean fell, previous to this death, at his farm when preparing to mow hay, which caused a head injury. He became seriously ill and was taken to Holy Family Hospital where he died of a cerebral hemorrhage about five hours later, 12:55 a.m., June 23.

He was born Oct. 30, 1895 at Maple Hill, the son of James and Iola McKean. Mr. McKean attended school at Maple Hill and Highland Park College in Des Moines. He married Mae Burkholder, Sept. 20, 1917 at Washington, Iowa. The McKeans became the parents of four children, three boys and one girl.

Mr. McKean was a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Estherville and was a veteran of World War I.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sons, Glenn and Dale. Survivors include his wife, one daughter Mrs. Selmer (Lois) Matre of Estherville and one son, Ralph, of Estherville. Also surviving Mrs. McKean in death are four grandchildren; five brothers, Charles, Mack, both of Armstrong; Edwin of Estherville; Raymond of Maple Hill and Thomas of Gruver; and two sisters, Mrs. Kenneth Ayers and Mrs. Chris Jesperson of Estherville.

Relatives who attended the services from out-of-town were: Mr. and Mrs. Bert Burkholder, Gary, Minn.; Mrs. Anton Molland and daughter; Mrs. George Mattson, Lake Park, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bring, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Burkholder Jr. and two daughters, all of Galesburg, North Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. John Burkholder, Mayville, North Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thompson, Hope, North Dakota; Mr. and Mrs. Leon Thompson, Clifford, North Dakota; Mr. James McKean, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Mrs. Wesley Sanby, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. Harold Haag, Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Berry, all of Orient, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Ben Burkholder, Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Earl Kellogg, Winfield; Mrs. Ethel Hitchew, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Russell Ryner and Ronnie, Galesburg, Illnois; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Toland and Mrs. Lester Filbert of Bushnell, Illinois.
