Jim McKean passed away at his home north of Halfa on Friday morning after quite a few years of lingering illness. Services were held from the Maple Hill church on Sunday afternoon. Burial being made in the Armstrong cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, November 9, 1927)

Early Settler of Near Halfa Called In Death
Jas. G. McKean Was a Leader Among His Neighbors – 8 Children Survive
James Garside McKean, a man who for 36 year had been a leader in the affairs of Maple Hill and Halfa communities, passed away at his home near Maple Hill, Friday, November 4, of cancer, at the age of nearly 70 years.

Mr. McKean was born near Spragueville, on November 27, 1857. He lived in that community with his parents until 1875 when the family moved to Webster county. In the spring of 1891, he purchased the farm near Maple Hill where he spent the remainder of his life.

On March 12, 1891, he was united in marriage to Hester Iola Shaw of Paton, Iowa, she departing this life April 11, 1910. To this union nine children were born, all of whom are living in this immediate vicinity with the exception of one which died in infancy and is buried besides its mother in the Armstrong cemetery. Max and Esther are residing at home, Thomas with his brother Raymond, Mrs. Ruth Jesperson, Ed., George and Charles are all on farm near the home place. Besides the children and grand children, one brother, J.E. McKean, of Houston, Texas, survives.

Mr. McKean was formerly a member of the Methodist church at Paton, Iowa, transferring his membership to the Presbyterian church at Maple Hill, and later to the Presbyterian church at Halfa.

Funeral services were held from the Maple Hill church Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock in charge of Rev. Nicholls of Bettendorf. Burial was made in the Armstrong cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, November 9, 1927)

Is Survived by Eight Children
Maple Hill, Nov. 8 – James McKean, 69, died at his home near Maple Hill early Friday morning. Mr. McKean had been in poor health for a number of years.

He is survived by his eight children and a brother from Texas.

The children are Mrs. Ruth Jespersen and Miss Esther McKean, daughters, and Charles, Edwin, George, Raymond, Mack and Thomas, sons. All of the children in the vicinity of Maple Hill.

Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church here at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in charge of Rev. Nichol. The body was taken to Armstrong for burial. (Estherville News, Estherville, IA, November 9, 1927)
