Emmet County Now Has Third War Casualty
Dolliver Boy is Killed
Dies From An Airplane Crash in Texas; Is The Son of George McKean of Dolliver
Friends of Mr. and Mrs. George McKean and family of Dolliver were shocked and sorry when word was received of the death of their son, Aviation Cadet Glenn McKean, who was killed Tuesday at Bakersfield, Texas in an airplane crash. Cadet McKean has recently been transferred to this field. The family received a telegram on Wednesday morning from Bakersfield, Texas.Cadet McKean was 23 years old on March 1, 1942 and had been in the service only a few months prior to his death. He was a graduate of the Dolliver High school in 1936, was president of his class. Because of scholastic and extra curricular activities he was well known by everyone in that vicinity. After graduation he stayed at his home near Dolliver and worked in the Farmers’ Cooperative Creamery for a while. Then he attended the Iowa State College at Ames taking up a course in creamery operation. After that he went to southern Illinois and worked in a creamery for a while then went back to Ames to finish his course.
As yet, no definite plans have been made for the funeral, but it is expected his body will be sent back and the service will take place in the Methodist Church at Dolliver of which he was a member. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, June 11, 1942)
Military Rites Planned for Glen McKean
A military funeral will be held Monday at 2:00 for Aviation Cadet Glen J. McKean, who met his death in an airplane accident Tuesday at Famosa, Calif. Services will be held at the Dolliver Methodist church and the Rev. C.L. Day will be in charge. Burial will be in the Armstrong cemetery.The body will arrive in Estherville Sunday morning and is to be escorted by Lieutenant Kanter of Bakersfield, Calif., where Aviation Cadet McKean has been stationed.
All Emmet county American Legion posts will take part in the funeral services. Each post will have its color section and the firing squad will be from the Estherville post.
Pall bearers will be high school class members at Dolliver: Carl Griese, William Knutson, Galen Weber, Robert Griffith, Ralph Miller and Lawrence Evans. Neill Finn, county commander of the American Legion, has requested each post to send as many men as possible, all wearing Legion caps. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 12, 1942)

Details of an aviation accident in which Glen J. McKean of Dolliver was killed at Famosa, Calif., are a military secret and cannot be revealed to the public, Lieutenant Kanter, who accompanied the body here from Bakersfield, said upon his arrival here. He said the flight was a routine training flight but no other details are available.A large group met the train on which the army officer and the McKean boy’s body arrived here Sunday. A Legion color guard and other representatives of patriotic organizations were present.
