Boy Dies From Rare Disease
Sleeping Sickness Fatal to Dale McKean
Sleeping sickness took its first toll in Emmet county yesterday when Dale Clifton McKean, 10, died at 10:15 a.m. at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George McKean, near Dolliver.Developing from an attack of influenza, the deadly malady attacked the youth about 10 days ago and since that time he has been in a deep coma.
The cause of his death was given as sleeping sickness by Dr. G. H. West, the attending physician.
The youth was born in Mapple Hill and had been attending the Dolliver school. He lived with his parents on a farm just on the outskirts of Dolliver.
Funeral services will be held at 2:15 p.m. tomorrow at the home and at 2:30 in the Dolliver church. Burial will be in the Armstrong cemetery. The Rev. Arthur G. Bailey will be in charge of the services with the Rev. C.R. Yeager assisting. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 10, 1934)
Obituary Dale Clifton McKean
Dale Clifton McKean, son of Mr. and Mrs. George J. McKean was born at Maple Hill, Sept. 20th, 1924. When five years of age the family moved to a farm just north of Dolliver, where they have since resided. Dale was the youngest of four children. James, Glen, Lois Irene and Ralph Allen surviving. Dale attended the school in Dolliver being in the sixth grade. He was greatly beloved by his school mates and all who knew him. About two weeks before his death he was taken with an attack of the flu which proved to be a very severe case and running a high temperature. From the third day of his illness he was unconscious, the malady developing into what was pronounced sleeping sickness, of which he died Tuesday, Oct. 9th at 10:15 A.M.Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Arthur G. Bailey of Estherville, assisted by Rev. C.R. Yeager of Dolliver. Scripture was read and prayer offered at the home at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, and at 2:00 p.m. at the M.E. church in Dolliver. A very large number of the neighbors and friends were present at the services including a large number of his schoolmates. They were sitting in a body. Interment was in the Armstrong cemetery.

Goerndt, Mrs. Frank Eggers and daughter of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Will DeLapp of Sherburn, Minn.; Mrs. Harry Reed, and Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Smith of Milford.
