Obituary C.B. Mathews
Charles B. Mathews passed away at his home in this city on Friday of last week after a lingering illness which lasted several months. On December 3 of last year Mr. Mathews suffered a stroke of paralysis and after a long siege improved some but never entirely recovered. About seven weeks ago he took suddenly ill with stomach trouble and on July 6 had a second stroke of paralysis and passed away a week later.

Charles Bowen Mathews was born at Erie, Ohio, December 12, 1844, and died at Armstrong, Iowa, July 13, 1923, age 78 years, 7 months and 5 days.

At the age of 18 he enlisted in Company H, 33rd Regiment of Wisconsin on December 18, 1863, and was discharged September 4, 1865, at Mobile, Alabama.

He was united in marriage to Lora Matteson, November 24, 1870, at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The same fall they moved to Iowa and homesteaded what is known as the Thomas Brooks farm north of town. They also lived on the old Heffelfinger farm a short time and then moved to the Geo. Johnson farm south of town. In 1893 they moved to Armstrong and after a residence here of two years moved back on the warm [farm] for a year and then to Armstrong where they have since made their home.

To this union was born eight children, all of whom are living and are as follows: Claude Mathews, Buchanan, S.D.; Eva Akre, Algona, Ia., Mary Dundas, Thorpe, Wis.; Dan Mathews, Mobridge, S.D.; Martha Barton, Spirit Lake, Iowa, Nellie Moore, Seattle, Wash.; Hattie McBride, Armstrong, Iowa.

He leaves a wife, eight children, thirty grandchildren and two great grandchildren, also two half brothers, Will and John Gibbs. His father died when he was four years old and his mother when he was fifty-two, and one sister passed away four years ago. This is the first break in the family in fifty-three years.

Funeral services were conducted in the opera house on Monday afternoon by Rev. Sutton of this place and at the cemetery by the Masonic lodge, he being a charter member of the order here. He was also a charter member of the Eastern Star and a member of the Knights Templar and Commandery at Estherville.

Geo. Matthews, of Thorpe, Wis., Mrs. Thos. Akre, of Algona, Iowa, and Mrs. Everett Barton of Spirit Lake, Iowa and Mrs. Frank Dundas of this place were at his bedside the past seven weeks.

Others attending the funeral from a distance were Mrs. Dan Mathews, Mobridge, S.D.; J.H. Coburn and son Dan and wife, and a granddaughter of Laurel, Neb.; Mrs. Kincaid, Sioux City, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Nicoulin, Algona, Iowa; Thos. Akre and sons, Chas. and Donald, Algona, Iowa; Everett Burton, Spirit Lake, Iowa. – Armstrong Journal (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, July 25, 1923)
