LuVerne – James L. Mallory of LuVerne, 65, died Dec. 9, 1993, in Lutheran Hospital at Des Moines. Jim had been ill with lung cancer.

Funeral service for him was at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in the United Methodist Church at LuVerne with the Rev. Joe Florendo, the Rev. Worthy K. Usher and the Rev. Richard Housman officiating. There was a special reading by Tammy Karrisson.

Burial was at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Armstrong Grove Cemetery at Armstrong, IA, the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home of LuVerne in charge of arrangements.

Honorary casket bearers were Rolfe Karlsson, Earle Hanselman, Cliff Lewelyn, Cecil Langerman and Dale Richardson.

Active bearers included David Hanselman, George Hanselman, Deane Mills, Bob Mallory, Jerry Mallory and Tom Cogdall.

James Lorimor Mallory, son of Deane Francis and Frances Edith Mennealy Mallory, was born Sept. 9, 1928 at McIntyre, IA. As a small boy, Jim moved with his parents to Austin, MN where he received his education. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1945 and served his country during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He was married to Lavon Ida Madden Dec. 30, 1950 near Zurich, Switzerland. The couple remained in Germany two more years, then returned to the United States. They went to Fenton for a short time, and moved to LuVerne Dec. 1, 1952. Jim was a rural mail carrier at LuVerne from 1959 until 1977. He was involved with the operation of the LuVerne Elevator until 1993.

Jim and Lavon enjoyed traveling and they lived, worked and traveled in 65 different countries. Lavon died Oct. 21, 1988.

He was a member of the LuVerne United Methodist Church, Chairman of the Board of the Madden-Mallory Foundation, District Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of America, a member of the Board of Directors of the Iowa Easter Seal Society and had served as the state president.

Jim was chairman of House of Delegates of the National Easter Seal Society and a life member of the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and the V.F.W. Jim owned and raced horses and was a member of the HBPA, Inc., the Horseman’s Benevolent and Protective Association. He collected stamps, coins, antiques and collectibles.

He was awarded the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America, the Outstanding Achievement Award from the National Easter Seal Society and the Distinguished Service Award from the Easter Seal Society.

He is survived by two brothers, Dan Mallory of Portland, OR and Larry, Austin, MN. There is one sister, Dorothy Mills of St. Paul, MN. His wife, parents, and a sister, Vi, are deceased.
