LuVerne – Lavon Mallory, a popular LuVerne resident, died at her home Friday, Oct. 21, following a lengthy illness with cancer.

Funeral service for Mrs. Mallory was held in the United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25. The Rev. Richard Layman, the Rev. Worthy K. Usher of the United Methodist Church at Marshalltown, and the Rev. Mark Berbano, United Methodist Church at Vinton, officiated and burial was in the Armstrong Grove Cemetery at Armstrong with the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Service of LuVerne in charge of the arrangements.

Lavon Ida Madden, daughter of Joseph William and Alma Mae Kohl Madden, was born at Halfa, IA [February 12, 1916]. She graduated from Seneca High School and attended Coe College at Cedar Rapids. Lavon went to Drake University at Des Moines where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree. She taught school at Seneca, Lakota, Titonka and LaVerne.

Lavon volunteered for service with the American Red Cross early in World War II. She served in North Africa, Italy and Germany. After the war was over, Lavon served overseas with the Army Special Services.

She was married to James Mallory on Dec. 30, 1950, the anniversary of the marriage of her parents, at Zurich, Switzerland. Jim and Lavon were married again Feb. 24, 1951 at Oberstdorf, Germany and exchanged their vows again the following day in Munich, Germany.

The Mallorys stayed another two years in Germany before returning to the United States. They spent a short time at Fenton, then moved to LuVerne Dec. 1, 1952.

Lavon touched many lives. She was a member of the United Methodist church where she was active in the women’s organizations, a member of the LuVerne Library Board and its president for many years. She was a more than 25-year member and past chairman of the LuVerne Community Chest, a member of the Humboldt China Painters Association and the World China Painters Association.

Mr. and Mrs. Mallory enjoyed traveling and they lived, worked and traveled in 65 different countries, making many friends around the world.

Lavon is survived by her husband, Jim and a sister, Joan, Mrs. Howard Boyer of Humboldt. (Algona Upper Iowa Des Moines, Algona, IA, October 28, 1988)
