George Madden Dies
George Madden of Ringsted, for many years the president of the Halfa board of education, died suddenly today at 1 p.m. at the Holy Family hospital. He had been hospitalized for the past week but it was thought his condition was not critical. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 2, 1946)

George Madden, 56, Dies After Suffering Stroke
Funeral Services to Be Held Sunday in Halfa
George W. [Washington] Madden, 56-year-old Emmet county farmer, died yesterday at 12:30 p.m. at Holy Family hospital as result of a paralytic stroke. He had been in failing health for about a year and in the hospital for nine days.

Madden had lived on a farm between Armstrong and Ringsted for about 40 years and was well known throughout the county for his long service as president of the Halfa school board.

He had served in that position for the past 20 years. He also was a member of the Halfa telephone board and an elder in the Halfa Presbyterian church.

Born at Whittemore on May 23, 1890, Madden moved to Emmet county at the age of 15.In 1915 he married Alta Kohl at Halfa.

Survivors include his wife; his father, J.W. Madden of Armstrong; three sons, Lloyd at home, Loren of Armstrong, Gerald of Ringsted; and a daughter, Mrs. Cecil Langerman of Armstrong. Four grandchildren, two brothers and seven sisters also survive. He was preceded in death by a sister.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the home and at 2:30 in the Halfa Presbyterian church, Rev. W.S. Sinning officiating. Burial will be in Armstrong Grove cemetery.

Friends may call at the Mahlum and Sandin chapel Saturday afternoon and evening. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 3, 1946)
