Last Rites for Joseph Madden, 91, Are Held
Last rites for Joseph William Madden, 91,were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, from the Armstrong First Methodist church. The Rev. S.E. Polovina was in charge of the services and he was assisted by the Rev. Alex Orr. Burial was made in Armstrong Grove cemetery.

Joseph William Madden, son of George and Sarah Madden, was born Nov. 3, 1860, on a farm near Sumner and died June 7 a Mankato, Minn., at the age of 91 years, seven months and four days. He had been in poor health since March of this year, entering the hospital in Mankato on March 22 where he remained until his death.

Mr. Madden lived with his parents on a farm and he attended the rural schools in Bremer county, graduating from Sumner high school.

He was united in marriage to Bertha Burow [Buhrow]Oct. 7, 1886, and to this union were born 11 children, three sons and eight daughters.

He moved to Emmet county in 1904. Previously he lived in Kossuth county at Burt and Whittemore. He farmed for a number of years and in 1907 was appointed mail carrier out of Halfa, Ia. He served in that capacity for 24 years, retiring at the age of 70.

Mr. Madden was brought up in the United Brethren church and later united with the Presbyterian church at Halfa where he was a member for more than 40 years.

His wife died in 1943. He was also preceded in death by one daughter and one son. His surviving children are: Joe Madden of Fenton, Leonard of Armstrong, Mrs. Robert Fisher, Mrs. Sam Myklebust and Mrs. Dick Adams, all of Des Moines; Mrs. E.J. Ninedorf of Waterloo; Mrs. Lawrence Hiene and Mrs. Verne Hiene of Waverly, and Mrs. Martin Jensen of Mankato, Minn.

Mr. Madden also is survived by 18 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson; by four brothers, John of Phoenix, Ariz., Ed of Tyler, Minn., George of Lynd, Minn. and James of Sumner. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 20, 1952)
