Armstrong Woman Dies
Armstrong – Mrs. Nicolas Looft, longtime Armstrong resident, died yesterday at 11:35 a.m. as a result of a stroke. Mrs. Looft had been in ill health for the past nine years and had been a patient at the Turner Nursing Home.The former Lizzie Nissen was born May 5, 1888, at Wesselburen, Germany, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Nissen [per 1925 census, William Nissen and Louise Reimers].
At the age of 19 Miss Nissen came to the United States and five years later on March 20, 1912, she married Nicholas E. Looft at LuVerne.
Mr. and Mrs. Looft settled in Armstrong where Mr. Looft was engaged as a butcher and store manager.
Mrs. Looft was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church and of the ALCW.
She is survived by her husband, four sons, Howard and Randall, both of Spokane, Wash., Leon of Armstrong, Robert of Ames; one daughter, Mrs. Effner (Betty) Opsal of Armstrong; 15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are a brother, Conrad Nissen of Mason City, and two sisters, Mrs. George Meyer of Whittemore and Mrs. Mimi Campbell of Spencer.
Funeral services are to be Thursday at Nazareth Lutheran Church, a family service at 1:45 p.m. to be followed by public services at 2, the Rev. Carl Klein officiating. Burial will be in the Armstrong Grove Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Slaba Funeral Home all day Wednesday and until noon Thursday. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 15, 1964)
