Estherville – Funeral services for Mary Long, 91, of Estherville, will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at United Methodist Church in Estherville. Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Estherville. Interment will be at Armstrong Grove Cemetery in Armstrong.

She died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at Longhouse Nursing Home in Spencer. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, January 19, 2008)

Mary A. Long, daughter of Richard and Johanna (Beck) Metz, was born September 17, 1916, in Swea City, Iowa. She passed away, Thursday, January 17, 2008, at the Longhouse Resident Home in Spencer, Iowa, at the age of 91 years and 4 months.

Her childhood years were spent in the Ringsted, Iowa area where she attended school and graduated from the Ringsted High School in 1934. In April 1936 Mary was united in marriage to Floyd Long. Mary and her family lived and farmed in the Northwest Iowa and Southern Minnesota area for several years. Mary also modeled shoes, was a live-in cook, raised and prepared chickens and their eggs for sale, baked pies for Dairy Delight and was employed for over thirty years as a housekeeper by a few beloved families in Estherville until her retirement in 1993. In 2002 Mary moved to Spencer, Iowa and resided at Riverview Assisted Living / St.Luke's Nursing Home and the Longhouse Resident Home.

Mary was a member of the United Methodist Church in Estherville, Iowa. She was a great cook and had a wonderful 'green' thumb, both indoors and out. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Going for coffee with long time friends was an important part of her day. Mary's gentle, caring, and sincere ways were felt by all that knew and loved her.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Dan Long and his wife Linda of Harlingen, Texas; Margie Pitts and her husband Chuck of Spencer, Iowa; Bonnie Howard and her husband Glenn of Dolliver, Iowa; Tim Long of Dodge City, Kansas; nine Grandchildren: James Long, Darin Long and his wife Amanda, Billie Jo Nitchals and her husband Chad, Lindsay Howard, Rodger Linn and his wife Kristy, Rodney Linn, David Isenhower and his wife Michelle, Justin Long, Jameson Thede; nine Great-Grandchildren: Steven, Holly, Brody, Brandon, Courtney, Caden, Aryn, Kyle, and Cory; and four Great-Great grandchildren: Alexander, Tatiana, Jimi, and Jackson. She is also survived by one sister Edna Foth of Bancroft, Iowa, one sister-in-law Dorothy (Taylor) Dirksen of Estherville, Iowa, first cousins, many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding Mary in death were her parents, two brothers: Jim and Robert Metz; and one sister: Agnes Wilson and her husband Ralph.
