Heart Attack Claims Armstrong Man After Pickups in Collision
Armstrong – A 69-year-old Armstrong man is dead following a two-vehicle accident at 5:15 p.m. Thursday approximately four miles southwest of Armstrong.

An Iowa Highway Patrol spokesperson said Clarion B. [Burns] Long, Armstrong, apparently suffered a fatal heart attack after the 1978 pickup he was driving and a 1979 pickup driven by Roger Duane Tirevold, also of Armstrong, collided at the intersection of Emmet County Road N60 and a county gravel road about one mile south of Iowa Highway 9.

According to the patrol, 25-year-old Tirevold was traveling south on N60 and Long was traveling east on the gravel road. Long allegedly failed to yield at a stop sign. Tirevold reportedly swerved to the left, but both vehicles collided in the southbound lane.

The spokesperson said Long got out of his vehicle and checked on the occupants of the Tirevold pickup. Then, after climbing in and out of the ditch about three times, Long collapse of an apparent heart attack.

Roger Tirevold and a passenger in his vehicle, Mary Tirevold, were both taken to an Armstrong physician’s office for treatment of minor injuries. Roge received head injuries and Mary sustained injuries to the lower torso.

Damage to the Long vehicle was estimated at $6,000 to the front, left front and right front. The Tirevold vehicle reportedly sustained $9,000 damage to the front, right front, right middle and right rear. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 27, 1979)
