Tuesday Services Planned for Garfield Horswell
Garfield S. [Stapleton] Horswell, 88, Armstrong, died at 7:25 p.m. Saturday [September 19,1970] at Holy Family Hospital. He was born July 24, 1882, in Armstrong Grove Township. His parents were Mr. and Mrs. Richard Horswell. He attended rural Armstrong schools. He was married March 27, 1907, to Anna Wegner, at Armstrong. Horswell spent his entire life in the Armstrong area and farmed until his retirement to Armstrong in 1942. He was an honorary member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, served for many years on the Armstrong school board and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Armstrong.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Keith (Esther) McKean, Armstrong and Mrs. Herman (Bernice) Blom, Estherville; 12 grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Mae Laisey, Glendive, Mont., Mrs. Thyrza Johnson, Sioux City, and Mrs. Blanche Woodbury, Upper Mont Clair, N.J.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sons, three brothers and three sisters.

Services will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, Armstrong. The Rev. Travis Kannaday will officiate. Burial is at Armstrong Grove Cemetery, Armstrong.

Friends may call Reese-Henry Funeral Home, Armstrong, from noon today until noon Tuesday when the casket will be taken to the church. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 21, 1970)

SERVICES TUESDAY FOR G.S. HORSWELL, 88, LONG-TIME ARMSTRONG RES.

Funeral services for Garfield Staplin Horswell, 88, of Armstrong, were held on Tuesday, September 22, at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, with Rev. Travis Cannaday officiating. Burial was at the Armstrong Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Horswell died Saturday at the Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.

He was born July 24, 1882, the son of Richard and Dorcas Horswell. He received his education in the Armstrong schools.

He was married March 27, 1907, to Anna Wegner in Armstrong. He lived his entire life in the Armstrong area and retired to Armstrong in 1942.

He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge and a member of the United Methodist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Keith (Esther) McKean of Armstrong and Mrs. Herman (Bernice) Blom of Estherville, 12 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Thyrza Johnson of Sioux City and Mrs. Blanch Woodbury of Montclair, N.J.

He was preceded in death by his wife, two sons, three brothers, and one great-grandson.
