Armstrong – Services for Mrs. Nellie M. [May] Laffey, 81, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church, Armstrong, with the Rev. David H. Wagner officiating. Interment will be in Armstrong Grove Cemetery. She died Tuesday, April 23, 1985 at the Fairmont Community Hospital.

Friends may call at the Henry and Olson Funeral Home in Armstrong after 3 p.m. Thursday.

Nellie Verbrugge was born Nov. 8, 1903 in Eagle Township, Kossuth County, Iowa and was the daughter of John and Wilhelmina (Minnar) Verbrugge. She received her education in the Armstrong Schools graduating high school in 1923. After graduation she attended Cedar Falls Teachers College. She taught school prior to her marriage to Joseph F. Laffey on July 6, 1925, the couple was united in marriage at Estherville. She lived her entire life in the Swea City and Armstrong areas. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, U.M.W., Armstrong-Bonanza Rebekah Lodge and American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include six sons: Warren, Don, James and Raymond Laffey all of Armstrong; Robert Laffey, Sacramento, Calif. and Jerry Laffey, Onawa; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one brother John Verbrugge, Jr., Swea City and one sister Mrs. Oliver (Rose) Stoeber, Marshalltown.

She was preceded in death by her husband in July of 1967; one son, Duane; parents; one sister and two brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, April 25, 1985)
