George C. Vedder, 61, Is Dead
George C. Vedder, 61, a linotype operator for the Estherville Daily News for 28 years, died lat eveing at Holy Family hospital, where he was taken with a heart attack.

After making what appeared to be a satisfactory fight after suffering a coronary occlusion on Oct. 23, he underwent a relapse this week and passed away at 10:30 p.m. yesterday.

Mr. Vedder received early training as a printer a Laurens, with the Emmetsburg Democrat and the Palo Alto Reporter, of which at one time he was co-publisher.

He came to Estherville in 1926 to work for the Estherville Democrat under Frank Carpenter and ever since has been in the steady employ of that newspaper, which became the News in 1927 and the Estherville Daily News in 1930.

In 1930 he quickly took the pace of Daily News operation and assumed the responsibility of news type production. Over a long period of time he was a steady producer of “straight matter” type, setting what printers call “clean” proofs and high production.

As deadlines approached his production increased and the spirit of making deadlines always proved a challenge. With the installation of automatic equipment two years ago the deadline load was lightened and it puzzled him why he should suffer an attack when he was feeling his best and had been relieved for many months of much pressure.

He cherished recognition given him on several occasions for the outstanding loyalty and service to the Daily News and for his outstanding work as a linotype operator, at which work he became an expert, aided by long and varied experience and because he was a constant reader, and well-informed on current events.

He was fond of sports but in later years denied himself some of the trips he had liked in order to take better care of his health. He was an expert bridge player.

George Curtis Vedder was born July 9, 1893, at Curlew and received his education at Laurens.

He is survived by his widow [Kathryn M. Vander Stoep Vedder] and five children: Mary Ann, a senior in high school, Mrs. Wayne Huntsinger, Mrs. Fay Higgins and Frank and Verlyn. There are seven grandchildren.

Preceding him in death was a son, George jr., killed in July, 1943, in military service.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mary Vedder of Graettinger, and four sisters: Mrs. L.W. Loving, Mrs. Myron Fogde of Graettinger, Mrs. E.F. Leach of Gardner, Mass., and Mrs. T.L. Hick of Boone.

Services will be held Friday, 2:30 p.m., at the Methodist church with the Rev. Harrison G. Daves officiating and burial in East Side cemetery.

Pallbearers are Roy Dunlap, Bennie Niemoth, Glenn Strom, A.J. McDonald, Donald Stoffel and Fletcher Knotts. Honorary pallbearers are James McKay, Ralph Bryan, Hoyt Luithly, B.B. Kint, Deemer Lee, Maurice Burrell, Otis Woods and Robert Lee. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, November 3, 1954)
