Farmer Falls Dead While He Drives Wagon
O.M. Hockett, farmer living west of here, died suddenly at 11:30 a.m. today, apparently from a heart attack, while riding in a wagon with his son, Arnold, a short distance from his home.

Hockett fell from the wagon and his physician said it is likely he was dead before he struck the gravel highway.

The son, and passerby from Terril, took the man to his home where a doctor and Coroner Fred Sternborg were summoned.

Sternborg said there will be no inquest.

Mr. Hockett is survived by his widow, three sons, Arnold, Delbert and Melvin, and a daughter, Mrs. Paul Rouse.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 11, 1938)

O.M. Hockett Funeral Will Be On Monday
Funeral services for O.M. Hockett, who died suddenly yesterday morning while riding in a wagon near his home west of town, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the residence and at 2:30 p.m. at the Church of Christ with the Rev. Fred Sawyer officiating.

Interment will be made in the Armstrong cemetery.

Mr. Hockett is survived by his widow, three sons and a daughter. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 12, 1938)

Heart Attack Fatal to Farmer

Otho Miller Hockett, 65, a resident of the Armstrong and Estherville communities for about 35 years, died suddenly of a heart attack just before noon Friday while assisting with the farm work at his place west of town. He was riding in a wagon when stricken.

Mr. Hockett was born in Marshall county near the village of Bangor on August 8, 1872. He lived in that community until 1893 when he came to Kossuth county to reside with a sister. His parents moved to Emmet county in 1895, locating on a farm near Armstrong and he remained with them until his marriage on April 3, 1901 to Miss Blanch Edna Houseman. The couple lived continuously near Armstrong with the exception of two years spent in the State of Washington until 1919. That year they moved to Welcome, Minn., where they lived until 1926 at which time they moved to the farm near Estherville.

Mrs. Hockett and four children survive the passing of this good citizen, three sons Melvin, Arnold and Delbert and a daughter, Mrs. Arvilla Rouse, all of Estherville. One child, a daughter, preceded her father in death.

There are also eight grandchildren, two brothers, Bert of Seattle, Wash., John of Evansville, Wis., and three sisters, Ruth Corey, San Jose, Calif.; Rilla Felkey, Elgin, Ill. and Margaret Thackrey, Fairmont, Minn.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at two o’clock from the home and at two-thirty from the Church of Christ. Rev. Fred Sawyer officiated. Interment was made in the Armstrong cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, February 15, 1938)

Obituary
Otha Miller Hockett was born in Marshall County near the village of Bangor, Iowa, Aug. 8, 1872. His boyhood and young manhood were spent in the community of his birth. In 1893 he came to Kossuth County where a sister, Mrs. Margaret Thackrey lived. For two years he made his home with her.

In 1896 Otha’s parents moved to Emmet County, locating on a farm near Armstrong. Mr. Hockett lived again with his parents until April of 1901.

On April 3, 1901, Mr. Hockett was united in marriage with Miss Blanch Edna Houseman. The first six years of their married life were spent on a farm near Armstrong. In the spring of 1907, Mr. and Mrs. Hockett moved to the state of Washington, where they resided for two years, returning again to Armstrong in 1909.

The next ten years were spent by Mr. and Mrs. Hockett and family in the community of Armstrong.

In 1919 Mr. and Mrs. Hockett moved to Welcome, Minn. where they remained until 1926 at which time they moved to the Estherville community locating on the farm where they lived at the time of Mr. Hockett’s death.

Death came to Mr. Hockett suddenly Feb. 11, at 11:40 a.m. while working with his son, at the age of 65.

One child, a daughter, preceded the father in death, but he is survived by his widow, four children, eight grandchildren, two brothers,, three sisters. The children’s names are Melvin, Arnold, Delbert, and Mrs. Arvilla Rouse, all of Estherville. The brothers are Bert of Seattle, Wash., and John of Evansville, Wis. The sisters are Ruth Corey, San Jose, Calif., Rilla Felkey, Elgin, Ill., and Margaret Thackrey, Fairmont, Minn. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 17, 1938)
