Pioneer of Area Dies at Age of 96
Mrs. William S. Thackery [Thackrey], 96, a pioneer settler who came to the Swea City area in a covered wagon in 1892, died Saturday [December 11, 1965] night at the Viva Thackery home in Armstrong.Death came after a six-month illness and was attributed to complications of advanced age.
Margaret Lillian Hockett was born April 19, 1869, in Union, Iowa, and received her education in a Union grade school.
Feb. 22, 1887, she was married to William S. Thackery in Whitton. They lived in Marshall County before coming to a farm north of Swea City in a covered wagon in 1892. She was one of three women in her township at the time of arrival.
In 1913 they moved to the Armstrong area, going to a farm two miles north of Armstrong in 1924. She retired in 1956 and moved to the Thackery home in Armstrong.
Survivors include one son, Virgal of Armstrong; three daughters, Inez Kelley [Kelly] of Long Beach, Calif., Cora Browning of Forest City and Maudee Jongberg of Kissimee, Fla.; two brothers, Bert of Bainbridge, Wash., and John of Evansville, Wis.; 22 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
Her parents, husband, a son, a brother and two sisters preceded her in death.
Family services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First Methodist Church in Armstrong. Public services will follow at 2 p.m. at the church, Rev. Herman U. Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Armstrong Grove Cemetery. The body will lie in state, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.
