Armstrong Man Passes Tuesday; Was Long Ill
Robert Gabriel, 74, a merchant in Armstrong since 1893 passed away at his home there Tuesday morning of heart disease. Mr. Gabriel had been confined to his home since before Christmas and had been in failing health for a number of years.Mr. Gabriel was born in Postville, Wis. He was married there and continued to make his home at Postville until moving to Emmet county. He opened the Fair store at Armstrong and has continued as its proprietor in the years following. Mrs. Gabriel preceded her husband in death 16 years ago. Two children survive, a son R. E. Gabriel of Armstrong and one daughter, Mrs. Amber McGary of Madison, Wis. Armstrong Pioneer Succumbs After Long Illness; 2 Children Survive
Armstrong, March 18 – Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Methodist church for Robert Gabriel, 74, who died Tuesday of heart disease. Mr. Gabriel was confined to his home since before Christmas. He was born at Postville, Wis., and came to Armstrong in 1893 when the town was new and opened the Fair store here which he still owned and operated. He leaves two children, R.E. Gabriel of Armstrong and Mrs. Amber McGary of Madison, Wis., and four grandchildren. His wife preceded him in death 16 years ago. Mr. Gabriel was born at Postville, Wis., Feb. 4, 1857 and was married to Aletha E. Kegley Nov. 28, 1893. To this union two children were born Mrs. Amber McGary of Madison, Wis., and Richard E. Gabriel of Armstrong. He is also survived by five grandchildren and one brother, J.P. Gabriel of Harwood, Mo. Mrs. Gabriel preceded him in death on Mar. 8, 1915. Mr. Gabriel was a jeweler by trade coming to Armstrong from Ledyard shortly after the town was started and at the time of his death had been in business here longer than any other man in Armstrong.
Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the M.E. church conducted by Rev. C.B. Mitchell and burial was made in the Armstrong Grove cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 24, 1931)
