Peter Gaarde, 83, Dies; Rites Set
Peter A. Gaarde, 83, well-known Emmet County insurance agent, died yesterday at Holy Family Hospital where he had been a patient for more than eight months.

Born Sept. 24, 1876 in Denmark, Mr. Gaarde, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anders Gaarde, and their family came to the United States and settled in the Armstrong-Ringsted area.

He was married Jan. 5, 1907 to Myna E. Churchill at Armstrong and lived there the rest of his life. Mrs. Gaarde died in 1946.

The Gaarde’s had four children.

In 1955 Mr. Gaarde was married to Mrs. Mahtie Schorer of Sioux City. They lived at Sioux City and Armstrong after their marriage.

Secretary of Farmers Mutual Fire and Lightning Insurance Association of Emmet County for more than 30 years, Mr. Gaarde became president of the Association about 10 years ago and has held that office ever since.

Surviving Mr. Gaarde are his widow, his sons, Arnold of Armstrong and Earl of Modesto, Calif., and his daughters, Grace of Austin, Minn., and Mrs. Lyle (Fern) Askeland of Armstrong.

One brother and two sisters are also living: Chris Gaarde of Rapid City, S.D., Mrs. J.J. Rovn of Ringsted and Mrs. Mary Thompson of Sioux City.

Mr. Gaarde had 12 grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his first wife, two brothers, Hans of Estherville and Nels of Clinton, and three sisters, Mrs. Katheryn Reis of Ringsted, Mrs. Augusta Wilson of Glade, Kan., and Mrs. Sena Turner of Crookstone, Minn.

Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Armstrong at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. James F. Rowe officiating.

Burial will be in the Armstrong Grove Cemetery.

Friends may call at the Slaba Funeral Home in Armstrong until Tuesday morning when the body will be taken to the Gaarde residence. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 6, 1960)

Out-of-town Relatives Attend Gaarde Funeral
Armstrong - Peter Andersen Gaarde was born Sept. 24, 1876, and died June 5, 1960, at the age of 83 years.

A son of Mr. and Mrs. Anders Gaarde, he was born in Holstein, Schleswig, which was then under the Danish rule. The Gaarde family came to the United States in 1879, and settled in Emmet County, Iowa. As a young man he farmed in the Ringsted area, later moving to Armstrong to enter the insurance business.

He was director of Farmers Mutual Fire and Lightning Insurance Association for 46 years, held the office of secretary for 32 years, and was president of the Association at the time of his death. Also he was interested and active in farming throughout his entire life.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Danish Lutheran church.

On Jan. 1, 1908, he was united in marriage to Myna [Mina] E. Churchill. To this union two sons and three daughters were born. Mrs. Gaarde died in 1946.

Mr. Gaarde was married to Mathie Schroer in January, 1954, who survives his death.

Also surviving are his five children, Arnold C. Gaarde and Mrs. Lyle (Fern) Askeland of Armstrong, Mrs. Dolan (Berneta) Gambell of Forest City, Earl M. Gaarde of Modesto, Calif., and Grace Gaarde of Austin, Minn.; four step-children, Charles J. and H.A. Schroer of Sioux City, William Schroer of St. Joseph, Mo., and Mrs. Mary Maseda of Prairie Village, Kan.; two sisters, Mrs. J.J. Rovn of Ringsted and Mrs. Mary Thomsen of Sioux City; one brother, Chris Gaarde of Rapid City, S.D.; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were two brothers, Nels A. Gaarde and Hans A. Gaarde and three sisters, Mrs. Sena Turner, Mrs. Catherine Ries and Mrs. Agusta Wilson.

Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, June 8, from First Presbyterian church in Armstrong with the Rev. James F. Rowe and the Rev. Harlan Blockhus officiating. Burial was in Armstrong Grove cemetery.

Relatives from a distance attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Earl Gaarde of Modesto, Calif., Grace Gaarde of Austin, Minn., Mrs. Dolan Gambell of Forest City, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Gaarde and Stephanie of Ames, Mrs. Mary Thomsen, Mrs. Ella Christensen, Mr. and Mrs. Charles J. Schroer and Ted, and H.A. Schroer of Sioux City, Mrs. J.J. Rovn of Ringsted, Chris Gaarde of Rapid City, S.D., Mrs. Lillian Reebel of Watertown, S.D., Mrs., Addie Wilson and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Matteson of St. Paul.

Mrs. Marie Troestler of Clarion, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Gaarde, Arnie Gaarde and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gaarde of Clinton, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Wilson and Mr. and Mrs. John Wilson of Grand Island, Neb.

Ries of Chestek, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Derald Morse and Mrs. Glen Morse of Woodward, Mrs. Mary Maseda and Steve of Prairie Village, Kan., and Mr. and Mrs. William Schroer of St. Joseph, Mo.
