Armstrong – Services for Mrs. Harriet L. Fries, 75, of Armstrong, were held on Tuesday, February 1, 1994 at the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Armstrong at 1:30 p.m. with Pastor Paul Rothfusz officiating. Interment followed in Armstrong Grove Cemetery. She died on Saturday, January 29, 1994 at Valley Vue Care Center in Armstrong.

Visitation was held on Monday at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Armstrong.

She was born on June 19, 1918 in Armstrong, the daughter of Gerhard and Sadie C. (Askeland) Johnson and received her education in the rural Armstrong schools and graduated from Cylinder High School. She moved with her family as a young girl to the Cylinder area. She married William J. Fries on November 6, 1939 at Whittemore. After their marriage, the couple farmed in the Cylinder area until 1952, when they moved to Armstrong. She was employed by the Jack Spratt Food Store until they purchased the East Side Café. They operated the café from 1957-1968. She was employed by the Valley Vue Care Center as a cook from 1970-1982, and has been a resident at the center since 1985. Mr. Fries died on July 7, 1988. She was a member of the Nazareth Lutheran Church and the Birthday Club of Armstrong.

She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Marceil) Kleine, of Swea City; three sons, LuVerne Fries of Sioux Falls, S.D., David J. Fries of West Des Moines and Vernon E. Fries of Armstrong; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Verlaine Johnson of Swea City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and sister. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, February 2, 1994)
