William Fries
Armstrong – Services for William J. Fries, 76, will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Nazareth Lutheran Church with Pastor Donohue Sarff officiating. Interment will be in Armstrong Grove Cemetery. He died Thursday, July 7, 1988 at Valley Vue Care Center, Armstrong.Friends may call at Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Armstrong from 4-9 p.m. Saturday.
Fries was born June 10, 1912 near Cylinder, the son of Ross and Mary (Korleski) Fries, and attended Cylinder School. On Nov.6, 1939 he was united in marriage with Harriet Johnson at Whittemore. Following marriage he did farm work and worked in a garage in Cylinder before moving to Armstrong in 1952, where he farmed two years then worked as night patrolman. He owned and operated the East Side Café and was head bus driver at Armstrong School for a number of years. After retiring he maintained Armstrong Grove Cemetery several years. He was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Harriet; one daughter, Mrs. Gerald (Marceil) Kleine, Swea City; three sons: LuVern, Sioux Falls, S.D.; David, Des Moines and Vernon, Armstrong; 13 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five brothers: Francis, Kandiyohi, Minn., Howard, Emmetsburg, Robert, Bloomington, Ill., Vincent, Tempe, Ariz., brother Earl, Estherville; three sisters Emily Fries, Estherville; Mrs. R.J. (Josephine) Young, Algona and Mrs. Oscar (Geraldine) Wiedenfeller, Le Mars.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 9, 1988)
