Peter Asbury Fouts
One of Emmet county’s most respected and most loved citizens answered the call at his home near Gruver last Friday afternoon. Peter Fouts was respected among men because of his sterling integrity, his willingness to aid and assist a friend and neighbor. He had been sick but a short time and his death came as a blow to his friends and loved ones.

Peter Asbury Fouts was born in Benton county, Iowa, June 5th, 1857, and died at his home near Gruver January 18th, 1918, being at the time of his death 60 years, 7 months and 13 days of age. He suffered a paralytic stroke last Tuesday and was unconscious until the time of his death Friday noon. On September 12th, 1880, he was united in marriage to Miss Lona [Lena] Alberts [Albert] and to this union seven children were born, two dying in infancy. After their marriage they moved to Buchanan county where they lived a short time and then moved to Emmet county in 1894 where they made their home until the time of his death with the exception of four years spent in Minnesota.

He leaves to mourn his death, the wife, three sons, Ross of Dolliver, Charles of this city, and Arthur who lives at home. Two daughters, Mrs. Clarence Wilder, of this city, and Emma, who lives at home, two brothers, one in Mapleton, Iowa, and the other in Toledo, Ohio, three sisters, one in Chicago, one in California, and the other, Mrs. Alberts [Albert], of this city.

Mr. Fouts has been a member of the I.O.O.F. since he was a young man and died a member of the Gruver lodge. He was devoted to the principles of this worthy order and did all in his power to live up to its teachings. In the lodge circles and among the friends and neighbors, he will be sorely missed.

Funeral services were held by Rev. Nichols, pastor of the Gruver church at two o’clock Sunday afternoon and interment made in the Armstrong cemetery. The I.O.F. had charge of the services at the grave. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community [last part unreadable]. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, January 23, 1918)

He was born in Benton county, Iowa, June 5, 1857, and hence was a little over sixty years of age at the time of his death.

September 12, 1880, he was married to Miss Lona [Lena] Alberts. To this union three daughters and four sons were born, two of whom died in childhood. The surviving children are Mrs. Clarence Wilder and Chas. Fouts of Estherville, Ross Fouts of Dolliver and Emma and Arthur Fouts at home.

In 1894 Mr. Fouts moved with his family to Emmet county and with the exception of four years in Minnesota, has lived here ever since, most of the time near Gruver.

He was a member of the I.O.O.F. Lodge at Gruver.

Besides a wife and children deceased is survived by two brothers, one of Mapleton, Iowa, and one of Toledo, Ohio, and three sisters, one in Chicago, one in California and Mrs. M. Alberts [Albert] of this city.

Mr. Fouts was a very industrious and hardworking farmer and a good citizen. He came to Emmet county when the county was in a very backward state, but he struggled manfully against ever adverse circumstance and succeeded.

He raised a splendid family and the county is better for him being a part of it. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, January 23, 1918)
