According to the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office, Linda M. (Mrs. James) Fothergill was a passenger in a car driven by her brother, Joseph E. Curtis, 30, of Spencer. The report states that Curtis lost control of his vehicle, which crossed the center line of the highway and slid sideways into the path of a car driven by Paul Hanson of Dawson, Minn.

Curtis and Fothergill were pronounced dead on arrival at the Orange City Community Hospital, while three year-old Amy Fothergill was hospitalized with leg injuries. Hanson and his wife, Jolene, along with their three children, Connie, Mary and Todd, were all taken to the Orange City Community Hospital, where the Hanson children were treated and released. Paul Hanson is listed in stable condition and Jolene Hanson is being held for observation for a possible concussion, according to hospital officials.

The injured were transported by the Alton Rescue Squad and Orange City Ambulance. An investigation into the accident is continuing, according to sheriff’s officials. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 28, 1985)
