Attacked by Bull; Farmer Severely Hurt
Ringsted – Apparently attacked by a bull while bringing in his cattle last night, George Fothergill of near Ringsted is in near critical condition today.

Fothergill, 23, suffered multiple rib fractures, a fracture of the right collarbone and multiple abrasions, contusions and lacerations in the accident which occurred about 7:30 last evening.

According to his wife, the former June Johnson of Swea City, Fothergill had gone after his cattle and didn’t return for some time. Mrs. Fothergill became concerned and went to the barn to check on him, but failing to find him there returned to the house and a 13-day old son.

A brother, John, called about that time and Mrs. Fothergill asked him to come to their farm located about three miles east and three miles north of Ringsted.

Fothergill was found in a field, badly battered, and was taken to Holy Family Hospital in a semi-comotose condition. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Fothergill of Armstrong. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 30, 1960)

Condition Still Critical
George Fothergill, 23, Ringsted, is still in critical condition at Holy Family Hospital, according to his attending physician. Fothergill was found in a field near his farm home Friday evening by his brother John, after being attacked by a bull. Gored by Bull, Dies of Injuries
Estherville – George Fothergill, farmer near Ringsted died in a local hospital Wednesday of injuries received when he was gored by a bull on his farm last Friday.

He was found in a field by his brother, John, who was summoned by Mrs. Fothergill after she was unable to find her husband. She became alarmed when he failed to return from driving in the cattle.

Besides his widow, Fothergill is survived by one son; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Fothergill; four brothers and one sister. (Ames Daily Tribune, Ames, IA, August 4, 1960)

Injuries suffered when gored by bull prove fatal
Estherville – George Fothergill, 23, died Wednesday of injuries suffered when he was gored by a bull on his farm near Ringsted.

Authorities said Fothergill was gored when he went to gather his cattle last Friday night. He was found in a field by his brother.

Blood was found on the horns of the bull that Fothergill told his brother he had battled the bull for 15 minutes.

Gored By Bull, Farmer Gets 17 Fractured Ribs
George Fothergill of Ringsted died last night at Holy Family hospital in Estherville after he was gored by a bull at his farm Friday.

A Ringsted farmer, George Fothergill, 23, suffered 17 fractured ribs and other serious internal injuries Friday when he was charged and gored by a bull in his pasture about three miles south of Armstrong.

Fothergill was not found for two hours after the attack by the enraged animal.

He was taken to Holy Family Hospital in Estherville where he remained in a critical condition.

The young farmer left the house to bring in the cows. As time passed and he did not return, his wife became alarmed and looked for him in the barn without success. Then she called Mrs. John Fothergill, a sister-in-law of rural Ringsted, and she and her husband went to George’s place where a search began. They found the injured man in the pasture about 9 p.m. He was conscious. Fothergill’s brother took him to the Estherville hospital. (Emmetsburg Democrat, Emmetsburg, IA, August 8, 1960)

Attack By Bull Proves Fatal For Farmer, 23
Ringsted – Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the Methodist church, Armstrong, for George Marvin Fothergill, 23, Ringsted farmer who succumbed Wednesday noon at Holy Family hospital, Estherville, after a five-day battle for life. Fothergill died of internal injuries he suffered when a bull attacked him at the farm owned by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Fothergill, which is located on the Kossuth-Emmet county line, three miles east and thee north of Ringsted.

Fothergill had been combining July 29 and had all the cows in the barn but one. He evidently forgot to take his dog along to the pasture, as the dog could take care of the animal. Fothergill who was conscious when found an hour and a half after the accident, related that the animal hit him from behind.

Some time after that, he lost consciousness and after a rain storm he was found by his brother, John. When Mrs. Fothergill, the former June Johnson of Swea City, noted he was in the barn far too long she went out to investigate. Finding him no where around she came to the house to check on their infant son, Roger Lee, who was born June 17. Later, Mrs. Fothergill and John located George in the middle of the pasture. Fothergill suffered multiple rib fractures, a fractured collarbone and other lacerations, and a tracheotomy had been performed earlier in the week in an attempt to save his life.

George Marvin Fothergill was born Feb. 8, 1937 at Armstrong to Mavin and Lillian Dolf Fothergill and graduated from Armstrong high school in 1954. He worked at Fort Dodge for a time and after his marriage Oct. 28, 1958 to June Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Johnson of Swea City they have lived on the farm near Ringsted.

He is survived by his wife and son, Roger Lee, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Fothergill, Armstrong, and one sister, Mary Jo, 8, three brothers, Earl, 11 years and James and John, the latter of Ringsted.
