DRAKE

One of the saddest accidents happened in this city Friday afternoon, at about three o’clock. The little baby of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Drake was burned fatally as the result of playing with a gasoline stove. It is thought that the child unscrewed the drain plug of the gasoline stove and that the gasoline soaked into its clothing and ignited. The mother made frantic efforts to save the child and was badly burned herself as a result of her heroic efforts. The fact that the stove was not entirely filled probably saved the mother from fatal burns. – Armstrong Journal (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, February 20, 1918)
