Armstrong, July 17. - Lewis [Louis] Joseph DeBates, a retired business man of Armstrong died Thursday at 1:00 P.M. at his home here with heart trouble.Mr. DeBates has been in poor health for several years but only the past week was his condition critical. He was born in Illinois on Feb. 5, 1870, making him 64 years, 5 months and 7 days old. He owned the Corner hardware here for several years selling to the present owner about 10 years ago, after which he moved to Adrian, Minn., for a short time returning to Armstrong about two years ago.
He leaves besides his wife [Frances E. Rupp], four children, Mrs. Frances Finnegan, Mapleton, Minn., John DeBates, Adrian, Minn., Alta, Clifton and Aletha at home, one daughter, Mrs. Helen Follet preceded him in death last September. He also leaves five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday morning at the St. Mary’s church here. Burial was made in the Armstrong cemetery. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, July 18, 1933)

L.J. DeBates died at his home Thursday [July 13, 1933] about ten o’clock after a lingering illness from heart trouble. Funeral was held Monday from the Catholic Church and burial was in the Armstrong cemetery. He leaves his wife and five children, Mrs. Pete Finnegan of Mapleton, Minn.; John of Minnesota; Clifton, Alta and Althea at home, also five grandchildren, a daughter, Mrs. Keith Follet, preceded him in death less than a year ago. Mr. DeBates was in the hardware business up until a few years ago when he retired from the business due to failing health. He was a man of sterling qualities, a kind, indulgent father and a friend to all. Sympathy is extended the bereaved family. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, July 19, 1933)
