Ex-Armstrong Postmaster Dies at 86
Armstrong – A former Armstrong postmaster and longtime harness-maker here, Fred Daries, died this morning at Holy Family Hospital in Estherville. He was 86.Ailing for the past year, he was admitted to the Estherville hospital two weeks ago. Complications of old age were responsible for the death.
The Rev. James F. Rowe will conduct funeral services here at 2 p.m. Thursday in the First Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in the Armstrong Grove Cemetery.
The son of John and Melia Daries, Fred William Daries was born April 19, 1875 at Burlington. He came to Armstrong in 1894 to work as a harness maker. Later her purchased his own shop.
In 1894 he was married to Edna Reber at Armstrong. She died Nov. 5, 1953.
Daries sold his harness shop in 1917 and went to Estherville where he worked in a bank until 1932. Upon his return to Armstrong he became the town’s postmaster, a job he held until 1942.
After his retirement from the postal department, he went to live with his only son, Edward, then depot agent at Harris. When Edward was transferred to Armstrong in 1958, the older Daries returned with him.
Besides his son, Edward, Daries leaves two grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. He had no brothers or sisters.
Friends may call at the Slaba Funeral Home from Wednesday noon until time of services on Thursday. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 18, 1961)
