Mother of 2 Children Killed in Car Wreck Southeast of Gruver
Is Sixth County Fatality
By Tom France
A 28-year-old Estherville farm wife, mother of two children, became Emmet County’s sixth traffic fatality of the year late yesterday when she was killed in a one-car accident four miles south and three miles east of Gruver.

Mrs. Walter Skog died instantly when the car she was driving went out of control, plunged into a ditch and overturned. Officers said Mrs. Skog was thrown out of the car and crushed beneath the vehicle.

The woman’s two children, Cheryl, 5, and Jeffery, 1, were passengers in the car but escaped injury in the smashup. Cheryl was thrown out of the car and the little boy was pinned in the back seat.

Officers estimated the accident occurred about 5:15 p.m. They said Mrs. Skog was driving west on the county gravel road, evidently returning home.

The Skogs have been living on the Don Howard farm four miles west and one north of the scene of the accident. Skog works on the Howard farm, officers said.

The accident was discovered about 5:30 p.m. approximately 15 minutes after it occurred, by Ray Peterson Sr. who was on his way home from shelling corn. Peterson told authorities he saw the little girl come up out of the ditch crying as he approached.

Orville Gjerde, Ringsted, who farms nearby, also heard the girl crying and came to investigate. The men succeeded in removing the infant from the car and notified authorities.

The children were taken to the Gjerde farm home and examination by a physician revealed neither was injured.

Officers said a tractor was required to right the car and free Mrs. Skog’s body.

Authorities were unable to determine the cause of the accident. They said the car apparently skidded approximately 200 feet before plunging into the ditch on the north side of the road and overturning.

Mrs. Skog, the former Doris Mildred Conn, was born April 19, 1932 in Kossuth County, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Conn, now of Sherburn, Minn.

Survivors besides Mr. Skog and the two children, include her parents, two brothers, Burley Conn, Fairmont and Ervin Conn, Sherburn; and two sisters, Mrs. Charles Marsh, Trimont, Minn. , and Mrs. Harold Showers, Jackson. Her grandmother, Mrs. Eide Mitchell, Estherville, also survives.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at the Estherville Methodist Church, the Rev. William R. Noland officiating. Burial will be in Armstrong Grove cemetery.

Friends may call at Sandin-Fuhrman Funeral Home from tomorrow afternoon until time of services. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 13, 1960)
