News of the death of James Carroll of Armstrong has just been received by wire from Iowa City where Mr. Carroll had been taken a short time ago for an operation for cancer of the stomach. Mr. Carroll was a very popular and prosperous farmer of the east side and this news will be a severe shock to the community. Mr. Carroll was well known to many people here. He is a son-in-law of Mr. John Dundas and a brother-in-law of U.V. James of this place. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, April 30, 1913)

Word was received here Wednesday morning that James Carroll had died at the Iowa City hospital where he went a few days ago for surgical treatment. The message was that he passed away Wednesday morning at 7:00. Mr. Carroll was taken to Iowa City Saturday evening and was operated upon Monday evening. The operation was for cancer of the stomach, and he never rallied from the shock. In addition to the cancerous growth there were numerous ulcers of the stomach which had caused severe adhesions to the intestines, and the operation was a difficult one. The remains were brought here this (Thursday) morning. Andrew Mitchell accompanied Mr. Carroll to Iowa City and was with him when the end came. In the death of Mr. Carroll this community loses one of its best citizens and a man who commanded the respect of all. It is a sad blow to the good wife and his family as they had hopes of his return from the hospital much relieved if not entirely cured of his ailment. (Estherville Democrat, Estherville, IA, May 6, 1913)

Mrs. U.V. James and sister, Miss Dora Dundas, attended the funeral of their brother-in-law, Jas. Carroll of Armstrong Sunday. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, May 7, 1913)

Note: per 1895 Iowa census, born in Canada
