Armstrong Woman Dies At Hospital
Mrs. Edward (Lillie Elizabeth) Burgess, 67, of Armstrong died Thursday [June 4, 1959] at 4:20 p.m. at Holy Family Hospital. She had been ill since January, when she had undergone surgery, and had been hospitalized for the past three weeks.She was the born Feb. 23, 1892, at Union, the daughter of Oliver and Mary Jones. She came to Armstrong in 1911 and worked for the Eugene Burgess family, who lived two miles west of Armstrong. She was married to their son, Edward Eugene, April 1, 1913, and they have lived on the same farm since that time. Mrs. Burgess was a member of the Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge.
She is survived by her husband, eight children and 20 grandchildren. The children are Gilbert of Estherville, Delbert of Fort Dodge, Byrl of Armstrong, LeRoy, who is in the Army and stationed at Ft. Riley, Kans.; Mrs. Arnold (Bernada) Skoge of Mankato, Minn.; Mrs. Ervin (Mavis) Loewenberg of Ringsted; Mrs. William (Mary Alice) Woody of Des Moines and Mrs. Edward (Donna) Grabianowski of Armstrong.
Also surviving are her sisters, Mrs. Joe Jackson of Stillwater, Okla.; Mrs. Franz Myers of Marionville, Mo.; Mrs. Susan Seeliger of Estherville and one brother, Henry Jones of Guthrie, Okla. She was preceded in death by one son, Arnold, in 1956, three grandchildren, three sisters, one brother and her parents.
Funeral services have been tentatively set for Monday at 2 p.m. at the First Methodist Church, preceded by a family service at the Burgess home at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. R.D. Tappmeyer will officiate. The Slaba Funeral Home of Armstrong is in charge of arrangements and burial will be in Armstrong Grove Cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 5, 1959)
Funeral for Mrs. Burgess Held June 8th
Funeral services for Mrs. Edward Burgess, 67, of Armstrong, were held Monday, June 8, at the First Methodist Church at Armstrong, the Rev. R.D. Tappmeyer officiating. Burial was in Armstrong Grove Cemetery, with pallbearers Lloyd Johnson of Dolliver, Bernard Homsey, Andrew and Harry Gram, A.J. Loftis and Frank Snyder, all of Armstrong. Mrs. Esther Wilson accompanied vocalists Mrs. Ken Miller and Mrs. Carroll Bogaard.Mrs. Burgess was born Lillie Elizabeth Jones, the daughter of Oliver and Mary Jones, on Feb. 23, 1892. She came to Armstrong in 1911 to work for the Eugene Burgess family. She was married to their son, Edward E. Burgess in 1913. They resided on a farm two miles west of Armstrong for 48 years, until the time of her death.
Mrs. Burgess was hospitalized at Holy Family Hospital three weeks prior to her death on June 4, and had undergone surgery in January. Death was attributed to cancer. She was a member of the Methodist Church and the Rebekah Lodge.
Survivors include her husband and eight children. Gilbert of Estherville, Mrs. Arnold (Bernada) Skoge of Mankato, Minn., Delbert of Fort Dodge, Burl of Armstrong, Mrs. Ervin (Mavis) Loewenberg of Ringsted, Mrs. William (Mary Alice) Woody of Des Moines, LeRoy, servicing in the Army at Ft. Riley, Kans., and Mrs. Edward (Donna) Grabinoski of Armstrong.
