Armstrong – Funeral services for Howard A. Blekfeld, 91, of Armstrong will be held 10 a.m. Saturday. Sept. 23, 2006, at United Methodist Church in Armstrong with the Rev. Lynon Roesler officiating. Interment will be at Armstrong Grove Cemetery in Armstrong with military graveside rites by Weiby-Jonson VFW Post of Armstrong.Visitation will be 5-8 pm. Friday at Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel in Armstrong.

Howard Alvin Blekfeld quietly and peacefully passed from this life on Tuesday evening Sept. 19. 2006, at Valley Vue Nursing Home in Armstrong.

Howard was born Jan. 18, 1915, at rural Fenton. He was the son of Thomas and Martha (Schmidt) Blekfeld. Howard was educated in various rural schools and Armstrong Community School. Howard’s father died early in life as the result of a car accident when Howard was 10 years old and his mother passed away in childbirth when Howard was 12 years old.

Howard quit school and went to work to help support his siblings. He entered the U.S. Army in 1941 and received an honorable discharge in 1945. He was united in marriage to Marita Charlotte Doering on Oct.13, 1942, at Clear Lake, Minn. Marita passed away on Nov. 9, 1961, at the age of 49. He later married Agnes Edwards on May 14, 1964. Agnes passed away on April 22, 2006.

Howard owned and operated Blekfeld Standard Service in Armstrong for 50 years. Howard loved his work and worked hard providing for his family. He was honest and enjoyed helping people with car problems especially on weekends when nobody else was around. He was a member of the ABC Club of Armstrong, a life member of VFW Post 5232, and member of the United Methodist Church in Armstrong. Howard will be remembered as someone who loved to visit. After retirement he spent many afternoons in front of his service station visiting with his friends. Howard had a lifelong love of singing, a profound sense of humor, and enjoyed fishing when he had the chance. Howard enjoyed spending time with his family.

Left to cherish his love and memory are his son, James Blekfeld, and wife, Ardell, of Swea City; his daughter, Eunice Keen, and husband, Lloyd, of Madison, Wis.; grandchildren Benjamin Blekfeld of Chicago, Ill., Matthew Keen of Milwaukee, Wis., and Melissa Keen of Madison, Wis.; a brother, Glen Neugent of Rolfe; and stepdaughters, Donna Lilienthal of Cyrus, Minn., Patricia Watt of Estherville; Deb Lytle of Spencer; a step-daughter-in-law, Barbara (Edwards) Carlson of Estherville; and their children and grandchildren.

Howard was preceded in death by his father and mother; stepfather (Ted Neugent); his two wives (Marita and Agnes); brothers Ralph, Thomas, and Durwood; and sisters Violet, Florence and Leona; and step-son Richard (Dick) Edwards. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 21, 2006)
