Estherville – Funeral services for Eldora V. [Valera] Hanson, 83, of Estherville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 9 at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, south of Gruver with Pastor Arlyn Norris officiating. Interment will be held at Swan Lake Township Cemetery in Estherville. She died on Thursday, July 5, 2001 at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville.Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday at the Henry-Olson-Fuhrman Funeral Home in Estherville.
Eldora was born on April 7, 1918 in rural Lincoln County, S.D., the daughter of Henry and Hazel (Mathiason) Hanson. She received her education in the Lyons, S.D. schools and graduated from high school in 1936. She then moved to Estherville.
On April 2, 1939, Eldora was united in marriage to Laurence S. Hanson in Estherville. They farmed all their married life in Emmet County. Mr. Hanson passed away on May 30, 1994.
Eldora was a member of the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church of Gruver, where she held numerous offices. She also taught Sunday School and Bible School. She served on the Spencer Conference Board of the American Lutheran Church.
She was a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Center and Rosewood Manor in Estherville. If there was a need for volunteer work, Eldora was always willing. She was a member of the Lakeshore Country Club.
Eldora enjoyed gardening, baking, crocheting, reading and quilting with the women of Immanuel. She was dedicated to her family and especially enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by three sons: Richard and his wife, Karen of rural Estherville, Kenneth and his wife, Judy of rural Estherville and L. Steven and his wife, Karen of rural Estherville; two daughters, Marilyn Haltey [Holtey] and her husband, Roger of Fairmont, Minn. and Marcia Cherland and her husband, Ronald of Fairmont; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Virgil and his wife, Vada of Rush City, Minn. and Donald and his wife, Diane of Duluth, Minn.; one sister, Marian Duncan and her husband, Wayne of Ceylon, Minn.; six sister-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, granddaughter, parents and three brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, July 6, 2001)
