Armstrong Man is First Emmet Road Victim of ‘72
In the first highway fatality in Emmet County for 1972, Charles Wayne Askeland, 19, Armstrong, was killed in a single care accident on blacktop road No. 15 at 10:45 p.m. yesterday.

Akseland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Askeland Jr., Armstrong, was traveling north on the road 1 ¾ miles north and one mile east of Armstrong, when he lost control of his car, according to the report of Emmet County sheriff Richard Dahl.

The car, a 1970 Pontiac, went off to the right side of the traveled portion of the road, then pulled to the left and went into the ditch on the west side, where it flipped over, end over end.

Askeland was thrown from the car and died shortly thereafter. The automobile was totally demolished.

Rites Sunday for Armstrong Auto Victim
Funeral services for Charles Wayne Askeland, 19, of Armstrong, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday. Askeland was killed in a one-car accident at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday on a blacktop road a mile east and 1 ¾ miles north of Armstrong.

He was born Nov. 6, 1952, at Estherville, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Askeland Jr. He attended and graduated from Armstrong Community schools.

At the time of his death he was employed by Rohlin Construction Company and lived at the home of his parents in rural Armstrong.

He was a member of Nazareth Lutheran church of Armstrong.

He is survived by his parents, one brother, Herman Tyrone Askeland, and one sister, Gayle Louise Askeland, both of Armstrong; also his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Tena Reitmeier, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Askeland Sr., of Armstrong.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Nazareth Lutheran church in Armstrong with burial in the Armstrong Grove cemetery. The Rev. Donahue Sarff will officiate.

Friends may call at Reese-Henry Funeral Home in Armstrong after 7 p.m. Friday until noon Sunday.

Pallbearers will be Bill Oleson, Rick Clark, Greg Askeland, Jean Guinn, Terry Harris and Gary Mart. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, March 3, 1972)
