Mrs. Martha Christiansen Dies at 83
Mrs. Martha Christiansen, 83, died Thursday [June 23, 1960] at 3 p.m. at the home of her brother, John Stanerson, who lives at 915 N. 14th. She had been ill for the past three months.
Mrs. Christiansen was born July 10, 1876, in Illinois, the daughter of Frank and Julia Stanerson. She received her education in Emmet County and Estherville schools, moving to this area in 1883. She was married to Tom Thompson in 1899. Mr. Thompson died in 1905. In 1917 she was married to Christian Christiansen, who died in 1929. Mrs. Christiansen had lived in Armstrong for 13 years before moving to her brother’s home 11 weeks ago.
She was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church at Armstrong. Survivors include one son, Ralph Christianson of Rock Island, Ill., four grandchildren and two great grandchildren; two brothers, Ed and John Stanerson, of Estherville; three sisters, Mrs. Josie Hillestad, Mrs. Grace Hanson and Mrs. Olaf Twedt, Estherville. She was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, one brother, her two husbands and two children.
A family service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Estherville Lutheran Church, followed by a public service at 1:30 p.m. The Rev. T.W. Maakestad will officiate.
Friends may call at the Sernborg-Reese Funeral Home from today until 10:30 Saturday, when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until services.
Burial will be in Palestine cemetery. Pallbearers are Ole Knutson, Lambert Locker, John Berge, John Tweedt, Erick Rasmussen and Lewis Heggen. Misses Martha and Margot Maakestad will sing “In Heaven Above” and “The Old Rugged Cross” and Mrs. Everett Shaw will be church organist. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 24, 1960)
