Longtime Area Resident Dies at 88
Dolliver – Melvin Christian Peterson, 88, seriously ill for the past three weeks, died Saturday [June 16, 1962] afternoon at his home here. He had lived in this area since 1910. [per WWI draft registration, dob July 9, 1873]Born in Franklin County, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Peterson, he was educated there. In 1892 he was married to the late Sarah Mills at Estherville and the couple farmed near Dows until 1900 when they moved to the vicinity of Dolliver.
Farming here until his retirement in 1937, Mr. Peterson then moved into town. He served as a member of all the boards of the Methodist Church here.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth of Minneapolis, a daughter, Mrs. Emmett (Mary) Trees of Armstrong, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Three persons reared in the Peterson home, Lyle Wicks of Dolliver, Mrs. Opal Miller of Rapid City, S.D., and Frank Snyder of Armstrong, also survive.
One brother, W.L. Peterson, lives here, and a sister, Mrs. Christine Richards, resides in Los Angeles. Peterson was preceded in death by his wife, two daughters, three sisters and one brother.
The Rev. Roger Tappmeyer will conduct a family funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Dolliver Methodist Church. A public service will follow at 2 o’clock.
Pallbearers are Lyle Wicks, Alvie Wicks, Frank Snyder, Linnley Barnes, Robert Griffith and Marvin Trees.
Friends may call at the Sternborg-Reese Funeral Home in Estherville today and until 10 a.m. Tuesday when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of the services. Burial will be in the Dolliver cemetery. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, June 18, 1962)
