John Kono Was Veteran Election Board Member
John Kono was born April 20, 1880, in Jasper county to Fred and Matilda Kono and was 74 years of age at the time of his death. He received his rural education in the Jasper county public schools.

He was married to Elizabeth Hyer on Feb. 6, 1906 at Newton, shortly moving to a farm near Dolliver. Mr. Kono remained active and interested himself in various community projects and community life, having served as a member of the township trustees and a trustworthy member of the election board.

While caring for some of the home chores, he was suddenly seized with a fatal heart attack on the morning of Oct. 1, and died without regaining consciousness. Illness had seized John some six months ago, however he remained quite active up to the time of his death. The suddenness of his passing shocked his relatives and friends.

He is survived by his wife, four brothers, Oscar of Newton, Levi of Kellog, Alva of Oakland, Calif., and Harry of Colfax; and two sisters, Mrs. Amanda Lynch of Los Angeles, Calif. and Mr. Vivian Ransom of Fl-- , and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, October 12, 1954)
