Estherville’s First 1974 Fatality
Crash Kills One Here
Estherville – Douglas (Tiny) Conrad Frerichs, 24, Estherville, was fatally injured late Tuesday night in a car-motorcycle accident on Central Avenue near the west city limits of Estherville.

A passenger on Frerichs’ motorcycle, Carol Konradi, 22, of Armstrong, was taken to Holy Family Hospital, where she is under treatment for a fracture of the right leg and ankle. Attending physicians report that she is in good condition.

The Iowa Highway Patrol said Frerichs apparently lost control of his motorcycle and it slid into the path of a car driven by Gary Smith, 30, of Gruver. Smith was not injured, but charged by authorities with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor.

The collision occurred just east of County Highway A-22, which heads toward the Estherville Golf and Country Club. Smith’s car came to a stop at the beginning of a by-pass on Central Avenue across the highway from the Orchard Lane entrance. Both Frerichs and Smith were believed to be traveling east at the time.

The Estherville Police Department and Iowa Highway Patrol investigated the accident which was reported at 10:33 p.m.

Funeral services for Mr. Frerichs will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Ceylon with the Rev. S.S. Sill officiating. Interment will be in Dolliver Cemetery.

He was born July 9, 1949 in Fairmont to John and Betty Yeager Frerichs. He attended Lincoln Central School, Gruver, graduating in the class of 1967. He was employed at Wadco, Estherville. Mr. Frerichs was a member of Dolliver Lutheran church.

Survivors include his stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Richard H. Holl, Dolliver; four brothers, David of Spirit Lake, Danny of Estherville and Daryl and Dale at home; his grandmothers, Mrs. Helen Ryan, Hastings, Minn., and Mrs. Lena Frerichs, Estherville; and a maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Ida Whitman, Estherville.
